As a recruiter, educator and parent, I have had a unique opportunity to witness firsthand just how unprepared we are for our careers.
There is a startling gap between the traditional school curriculum, and the real-world demands of professional life that leaves us without the tools needed to go successfully in the direction of their dreams.
The lack of education and information we receive in school follows us in to the workforce and ultimately hinders our ability to navigate the complexities of a job search and pivots we take throughout our careers.
I have started to build this space to help bridge the gap by providing tips and tools to all job seekers, at any age, and any stage, of their career.
I know career happiness exists, but without a roadmap, a guide or a toolbelt filled with knowledge; it can be frustrating and confusing to navigate the bumps along the way.
For those who have stopped here, I hope you find some answers, advice, information, inspiration and a push to take you off to your next destination.
One thing I have learned along my career in working with job seekers, is that anyone with a purpose, who know their possibilities, understands the search process and has confidence in themselves, will always reach their goal.
To have a JOB is to earn a paycheck.
Task=Payment
To have a CAREER is to be compensated for doing something you love.
A career is a long-term investment; a delicate weave of experience and knowledge in an area, where you can become an expert or authority in a subject and where your knowledge is compensated in growth and financial increases.
Having a successful career will always take strategy, forward thinking and planning in order to reach goals.
A career will have many transitions, pivots, setbacks, disappointments, challenges, highs and lows,
and if you invest in your career, stay true to it, nurture it, fuel it, feed it, grow it, don't give up on it, and enjoy it; it will reward you in a happier life.
As long as you have a toolbelt filled with the essential skills for career success, you will always be able to pivot and rebuild your career.
Passion is how you feel about something, purpose is what calls you to act on it.
Your purpose is the WHY you do what you do and also what guides you through your career and your mission keeps you focused.
You cannot continue to feed a
career you do not love. Eventually, you will burn out from being forced to do something day after day and resent it.
It is impossible to find something when you don't know what you are looking for, or what your options are.
It is the people we meet and the experiences we have, that lead us to finding our purpose.
Once you have identified your passion and purpose you will want to understand how those can lead you to a paycheck.
By taking a good look at your strengths, skills, experiences and interests, you will better be able to identify some positions and industries that would be of interest to you.
This part of the process is important so take your time to look within yourself before you start to research different positions because some may appear a match on the surface, but when you have a good look at yourself you will know if it is a good match all around.
Now that you have identified what you want, it's time to put a plan in place to get it.
Some careers will require a formal education, training, certifications or prerequisites to growing, so the better you plan, the easier the journey will be.
Education comes in various places and for some it is hands on experience, a trade where they feel the most passionate.
Sometimes we don't realize our purpose right away and start on a career journey in a direction only to realize we don't want to continue on that path.
You can change careers as many times as you want, you may have several positions or industries that excite you and fuel you and those things may appear different on the outside, but they aren't random.
They each have your purpose in them.
Don't let your desire to shift gears and pivot directions leave you feeling unsettled. Embrace what you are drawn to, set new goals, and pivot towards your next adventure.
